USA Trail running History:
Ultra:
There have been some ultras in the USA off and on since the 1870s, but all were on roads or track until 1974 when Gordy Ainsleigh ran the first Western States 100. As you may know, there is a horse ride called the Western States Endurance Ride (also called the Tevis Cup after the name of the championship trophy), held on the same trails as the Western States 100. This horse ride started in 1955 and is still going today. Gordy had ridden a horse in it a couple of times and thought maybe he could run the whole way. (note: many of the top horse riders get off the horse and run when the terrain is steep or technical; it is faster that way, horses don't like rough terrain). So the age of ultra trail started on August 3, 1974 when Gordy ran the entire horse race without a horse.
Trail running:
The oldest trail running race is called the Dipsea Race, which is just north of San Francisco by about 15km. It has been going on since November 19, 1905. There were a few years during World War II when it was not held, but it is now in its 102nd year. In the USA, only the Boston Marathon is an older race. The Dipsea is on a very hilly trail, about 700m of vertical climb in 7.1 miles.

1959: Arlene Pieper, 1st women finish a maratón in US in PPM
